Welcome back to year two of your high school career! Your Sophomore year will continue to provide opportunities for you to explore clubs, extra-curricular activities, courses/classes that interest you, while learning more about your strengths and aptitudes. Aptitudes are the gifts you were born with; tasks and skills you know how to do well. It is a year to really become aware of what those aptitudes are and combined with the experience you already have in areas of things you love to do, create some ideas of how you can use this knowledge to prepare for potential careers.
Please don't feel you have to have it ALL figured out! That would be a bit stressful... Developing this awareness about yourself can give you more time in high school to choose to participate in classes or activities that will help you form a proactive approach in growing your learning power.
For example, say you have an interest in technology and would love to improve some of the apps on your phone. Maybe you love gaming and know your ideas could really step up the animation a notch. Knowing you have the aptitude and interest in this area might lead to you choosing to explore the High School CTAE Pathway Game Design or Programming or Computer Science. You could possibly even complete all of them! You might even choose to use the last classes in each pathway to as a 4th science credit or even as your World Language opportunity. You may be interested in taking some AP classes or dual enrollment classes to further explore this interest while getting ahead with college requirements for free! Then, you may even decide that some practical work experience in these fields may help you meet people that can help your career while learning about real time work settings. You can do all of this through Work Based Learning and have a very creative schedule your Junior and Senior year! Some students may choose to earn a technical certificate in computer fields, meaning they can earn amazing salaries right out of high school!
The possibilities really are endless! Be encouraged to meet with your School Counselor and really pay attention to the information you receive this year about how to make strong academic plans. You may not know yet if you plan to attend college, enter the military or attend a technical college before hitting the world of work, but take the most challenging courses you can be successful in to plan for any opportunity. Protect your GPA by committing to producing the best work you are capable of earning! It will be an exciting year!
Know that you have a great deal of support in helping develop your plans. It is a great time for you to begin to advocate for yourself by asking questions, developing great relationships with your teachers and friends, and asking for help when something isn't clear to you or you feel stressed about decisions or issues.
